Eunha Gallery (Art in Dongsan) is pleased to present 《Threads of Interbeing》, an invitational solo exhibition by Kayo Aiba.

This exhibition focuses on the relationships and connections that link our lives in unseen ways, and on the interconnectedness of life itself.

Like roots intertwining and extending beneath the ground, our lives are also connected through countless relationships, moments, and memories. No existence is complete on its own; we live together, encountering and influencing one another.

The exhibition title, 《Threads of Interbeing》, envisions these invisible connections as “threads.” The phrase, “Invisible roots connect life,” evokes the way different beings form relationships beyond our sight, together creating a shared web of life and the world around us.

Through the traces of life that connect and intertwine throughout the works, we hope this exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on the invisible bonds that connect ourselves with others, nature, and the world.

Artist Introduction

Kayo Aiba | アイバカヨ

Kayo Aiba is a thread artist from Aichi Prefecture, Japan. After graduating from Nagoya University of the Arts, she moved to the United States to gain further experience. Upon returning to Japan, she worked at a design studio. Around 1999, she began her career as an artist by presenting her distinctive “Thread Art (糸Art),” creating images with sewing thread.

Moving across the boundaries of painting, textile art, and relief, Kayo has developed her own visual language of “drawing with thread.” She uses a sewing machine without relying on the free-motion function, instead freely employing regular straight-stitch techniques to layer and interweave various materials, including thread, fabric, and paper.

One of the defining features of her work is that she deliberately leaves the loose ends of the thread unfinished. The threads extend and intertwine freely across and beyond the surface, creating a light and playful sense of movement while giving the works a distinctive depth that is at once two-dimensional, relief-like, and sculptural.

Her awards include Graphic Art Hitotsubo 14th in 1999, The Choice 110th in 2000, the Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibition in New York in 2003, the Bronze Award at the Asia Travel & Tourism Creative Awards “Ad Asia” in 2006, and the TIS Exhibition Jury Award in 2007, among others.

She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including presentations at Estée Lauder Boutique, Ginza Itoya, Printemps Ginza, Hiroko's Place Cafe Gallery in SoHo, New York, and Gallery House MAYA in Tokyo.

Her work is also held in the collection of Ronald Lauder. Beginning with visual work for Estée Lauder advertising, she has expanded her practice into a wide range of fields, including corporate and transit advertising, displays, book and magazine covers, T-shirt designs, and corporate design projects.

In 2025, she participated in “Heart to Heart,” an exhibition jointly presented by Art in Dongsan and KOBUN Gallery to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, continuing her artistic exchange with Korea.
