Exhibition Introduction
Eunha Gallery (Art in Dongsan) presents a solo exhibition by OH SEI GI as part of the Art in Dongsan 2026 Open Call Selected Artist Invitational Exhibition series.
At the heart of OH SEI GI’s ongoing exploration in painting is “The Universe.” For the artist, the universe is not simply a celestial or physical space, but a vast realm of space and time through which he contemplates the relationships between humanity and the world, existence and life.
Layers of lines and colors, freely flowing paint, and countless dots and traces across the surface evoke images of the vast universe and the planets shining within it. Rather than representing specific subjects realistically, the forms in his works express the movement of the universe—where creation and extinction, order and chance coexist—through an abstract visual language. Dense lines crossing dark spaces and recurring points of intense light create the distinctive sense of cosmic space that characterizes his work.
The artist questions how human beings perceive and judge the world in an age when advanced science and information are constantly expanding. At the same time, rather than remaining within established artistic conventions or forms, he seeks to develop his own methods and logic of visual expression.
The mysterious realm of the universe emerging from silence, and the planets shining within it in their own distinct forms, resemble for the artist the existence of human beings. Through OH SEI GI’s long-standing contemplation of the universe and humanity, this exhibition invites us to look again at the world we inhabit and at our own existence within it.
Artist’s Note
“The subject of my paintings is the universe.”
In art, visual art is formed as a product of its time, changing and developing in response to the emotional needs of each era, and at times even disappearing. The phenomena of nature, images, and knowledge revealed through increasingly diverse and advanced science and technology can also be understood as cultural forms that shape our time.
Yet within the minds of contemporary people living amid an overwhelming amount of information exists a translucent window called desire. Through this window, reality can become distorted, and our ability to perceive and judge things clearly may also become blurred. This leads me to ask what new cultural forms our time demands of us, and how the natural order and its phenomena relate to human life.
Within these questions, I seek to move beyond the temptation of established artistic conventions and to discover my own methods of visual expression and the logic behind them within the flow of our time.
I use the mysterious and vast realm of the universe emerging from silence, and the planets shining within it in their different forms, as metaphors for human beings. By piercing holes into the surface, allowing paint to flow freely across the painted canvas to create lines, and cutting out and reconstructing forms, I express a universe of my own.

오세기 작가가 지속적으로 탐구해 온 회화의 중심에는 ‘우주(The Universe)’가 있습니다. 작가에게 우주는 단순한 천체나 물리적 공간이 아니라 인간과 세계, 존재와 생명의 관계를 사유하는 거대한 시공간입니다.
화면 위에 겹겹이 쌓이는 선과 색, 자유롭게 흘러내리는 물감, 수많은 점과 흔적은 광활한 우주의 이미지와 그 안에서 빛나는 행성들을 연상시킵니다. 작품 속 형상은 구체적인 대상을 재현하기보다 생성과 소멸, 질서와 우연이 공존하는 우주의 움직임을 추상적인 조형언어로 보여줍니다. 어두운 공간을 가로지르는 촘촘한 선들과 강렬한 빛의 점들이 반복되며 작가 특유의 우주적 공간감을 형성합니다.
작가는 첨단 과학과 정보가 끊임없이 확장되는 시대 속에서 인간이 세계를 어떻게 바라보고 판단하는지를 질문합니다. 동시에 기존의 미술적 유형이나 형식에 머무르기보다 자신만의 시각적 표현 방식과 논리를 찾고자 합니다.
침묵 속에서 떠오르는 우주의 신비로운 시공간, 그 안에서 서로 다른 모습으로 빛나는 행성들은 작가에게 우리 인간의 존재와도 닮아 있습니다. 이번 전시는 오세기가 오랜 시간 탐구해 온 우주와 인간에 대한 사유를 통해, 우리가 살아가는 세계와 그 안에서 존재하는 자신의 모습을 다시 바라보게 합니다.

“내가 그리는 그림의 주제는 우주(The Universe)이다.”
예술에 있어서 미술은 시대적 산물로 형성되어 시대의 감성적 필요에 의해 변화하고 발전하며 때로는 소멸합니다. 다양화된 첨단 과학기술이 보여주는 자연의 현상과 그 이미지, 지식 또한 우리 시대를 구성하는 하나의 문화적 양식이라 할 수 있습니다.
그러나 수많은 정보 속에서 살아가는 현대인의 내면에는 욕망이라는 반투명한 창이 존재합니다. 그 창을 통해 현실이 왜곡되고 사물을 올바르게 판단하는 시선 역시 흐려질 수 있습니다. 이러한 시대는 우리에게 어떠한 새로운 문화적 양식을 요구하는가, 그리고 자연의 순리적 현상들은 인간의 삶과 어떠한 관계를 맺고 있는가를 질문합니다.
나는 이러한 의문 속에서 기존 미술의 유형이라는 유혹에서 벗어나, 시대의 흐름 속에서 나만의 시각적 표현 방법과 그 논리를 찾고자 합니다.
침묵 속에서 떠오르는 우주의 신비롭고 광활한 시공간, 그 안에서 서로 다른 모습으로 빛나는 행성들을 인간의 모습에 은유합니다. 화면에 구멍을 뚫고, 채색된 화면 위로 물감을 자유롭게 흘려 선을 만들며, 그 형상들을 오려내고 다시 구성하는 과정을 통해 나만의 우주를 표현합니다.
