Soonok Kwun Solo Exhibition: Mon Ami Ego Bird presents a body of work centered on the artist’s long-developed symbolic figure, Ego Birds.

Rather than a simple motif, Ego Birds embody the artist’s inner self, emotions, and her way of perceiving the world. Within the works, these figures move through landscapes and shifting emotional states, acting as mediators between the self and the surrounding world.

Through painting and mixed media, Kwun builds richly textured surfaces by layering material and color. Her process of repetition and accumulation transforms the image into more than representation—it becomes a condensed state of time, memory, and sensation.

In this exhibition, the presence of Ego Birds—often facing or coexisting with one another—suggests relationships between self and other, or between different aspects of the self. The subtitle Mon Ami (“my friend”) reflects the artist’s perspective of embracing this presence not as an external other, but as a companion within.

This exhibition reveals how a symbolic form can expand into a broader reflection on emotion and existence. As viewers encounter the Ego Birds, they are invited to recognize and reflect upon another self within their own inner landscape.

〈권순옥展: 나의 친구 이고새 (MON AMI EGO BIRD)〉는 작가 권순옥이 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 구축해온 상징적 존재 ‘Ego Birds(이고새)’를 중심으로 펼쳐지는 개인전입니다.

이고새는 단순한 형상이 아닌, 작가의 내면과 감정, 그리고 세계를 바라보는 시선이 투영된 또 하나의 자아입니다. 작품 속에서 이고새는 자연과 풍경, 그리고 감정의 흐름 속을 유영하며, 자아와 세계를 연결하는 매개로 존재합니다.

권순옥은 회화와 혼합재료를 통해 물질의 질감과 색의 층위를 축적하며, 감정과 기억이 스며든 장면을 구축합니다. 반복과 축적의 과정 속에서 형성된 화면은 단순한 재현을 넘어, 시간과 감각이 응축된 하나의 상태로 드러납니다.

이번 전시에서는 서로를 마주하거나 공존하는 이고새의 모습이 강조되며, 이는 자아와 타자, 혹은 내면의 또 다른 자아와의 관계를 은유적으로 보여줍니다. ‘나의 친구(Mon Ami)’라는 부제는 이 존재를 타자가 아닌, 함께 공존하는 존재로 바라보는 작가의 시선을 담고 있습니다.
