여기 누가 있다

우리는 매일 수많은 사람과 풍경을 마주하며 살아갑니다. 그러나 익숙하다는 이유로 그들의 존재를 깊이 바라보는 일은 많지 않습니다. 이번 전시는 사진을 통해 우리 곁에 있지만 쉽게 지나쳐 온 존재들을 다시 발견하는 자리입니다.

여기 누가 있다는 두 개의 사진 연작으로 구성됩니다.

첫 번째 이야기 〈여기 누가 있다 – westay〉는 가족과 이웃, 공동체 안에서 살아가는 평범한 사람들의 모습을 담아냅니다. 작가는 얼굴을 기록하는 데 머무르지 않고, 그 사람을 둘러싼 시간과 관계, 그리고 삶의 흔적을 함께 바라봅니다. 사진 속 인물들은 특별한 누군가가 아니라, 우리 곁에서 함께 살아가는 이웃이며 공동체를 이루는 한 사람 한 사람의 이야기입니다.

두 번째 이야기 〈여기 누가 있다 – wildness〉는 사람의 모습이 사라진 자연을 향합니다. 광야와 들판, 바람이 스쳐 지나가는 빈 공간, 끝없이 이어지는 지평은 적막해 보이지만 그 안에는 수많은 시간과 생명의 흔적이 머물러 있습니다. 비어 있는 풍경은 오히려 보이지 않는 존재를 더욱 선명하게 드러냅니다.

예술학교에서 무대미술과 영화촬영을 공부한 최용석 작가는 오랫동안 공연예술과 사진, 영상 작업을 통해 사람과 공간, 그리고 그 안에 담긴 이야기를 기록해 왔습니다. 그의 사진은 대상을 설명하기보다, 조용히 바라보게 합니다. 그렇게 바라보는 시간 속에서 우리는 사진 속 인물과 풍경뿐 아니라 자신의 삶 또한 함께 마주하게 됩니다.

여기 누가 있다는 사람과 자연을 구분하여 보여주는 전시가 아닙니다. 서로 다른 두 이야기는 결국 하나의 질문으로 이어집니다.

우리는 무엇을 보고 있는가. 그리고 무엇을 놓치고 살아가는가.

이번 전시가 사진 속 누군가를 바라보는 시간을 넘어, 우리 곁에 존재하는 사람과 자연, 그리고 자신의 삶을 다시 바라보는 계기가 되기를 바랍니다.

Someone Is Here

Looking at a person and looking at a landscape may seem like two different acts. Yet Choi Yongseok's photographs reveal that both ultimately lead us to the same place. Time resides in the face of a person just as it lingers within a landscape left behind. In both, traces of existence remain.

Every day, we encounter countless people and landscapes. Yet, because they have become so familiar, we rarely pause to truly see their presence. Through photography, this exhibition invites us to rediscover the people and places that have always existed around us, yet have so often gone unnoticed.

Someone Is Here consists of two photographic series.

The first, Someone Is Here – westay, portrays ordinary people living within families, neighborhoods, and communities. Rather than simply recording faces, Choi observes the time, relationships, and traces of life that surround each individual. The people in these photographs are not extraordinary figures; they are our neighbors, our companions, and the individuals who together shape a community.

The second, Someone Is Here – wildness, turns toward landscapes where human presence has disappeared. Open plains, vast fields, windswept ground, and distant horizons may appear silent and empty, yet they hold the accumulated traces of time and life. These seemingly vacant landscapes reveal an unseen presence with remarkable clarity.

Having studied stage design and cinematography, Choi Yongseok has long explored people, places, and the stories they contain through photography, film, and the performing arts. Rather than explaining his subjects, his photographs invite us to pause and simply look. In that quiet act of looking, we begin to encounter not only the people and landscapes before us, but also reflections of our own lives.

Someone Is Here is not an exhibition that separates people from nature. Instead, these two distinct bodies of work ultimately lead to a single question:

What are we truly seeing? And what have we been overlooking?

It is our hope that this exhibition becomes more than an opportunity to look at the people and places within these photographs. May it also encourage us to rediscover the people, the landscapes, and ultimately ourselves, with renewed attention.
