Exhibition Introduction

Eunha Gallery (Art in Dongsan) presents Garden of Childhood, a solo exhibition by Alissa J, as part of the Art in Dongsan 2026 Open Call Selected Artist Invitational Exhibition series.

Since 2018, Alissa J has steadily developed her distinctive pictorial world under the title Garden of Childhood. Beginning with four invitational solo exhibitions in 2018 and continuing through a series of solo exhibitions from 2019 to 2025, Garden of Childhood has become a signature body of work that reflects the artist’s long-standing artistic journey.

This exhibition brings together familiar subjects—figures and animals, flowers and potted plants, interior spaces, and scenes at night—expressed through Alissa J’s distinctive and free-flowing painterly language. The subjects on her canvases go beyond realistic representation. Vivid and sometimes unexpected colors, uninhibited brushstrokes, layers of paint, and naturally dripping traces come together to create individual scenes.

The figures and animals in particular appear familiar yet somehow unfamiliar, resembling moments from everyday life while also evoking scenes from a story. A girl standing by a window, a figure holding a cat, two people facing one another, flowers and animals, and landscapes immersed in the depth of night each form a different scene, yet remain interconnected within the singular world of Garden of Childhood.

Garden of Childhood is a pictorial space to which the artist has repeatedly returned and which she has continued to expand over many years. Centered on recent works created in 2026, this exhibition presents the current evolution of Alissa J’s ongoing Garden of Childhood series.

Following the artist’s free-flowing colors and lines, figures and animals, and scenes from everyday life, viewers are invited to encounter the stories within the works through their own emotions and memories.

Alissa J

Alissa J studied Painting at Sookmyung Women’s University and later completed her graduate studies in Painting at the same university. Prior to this, she graduated from Ewha Womans University with a degree in French Language and Literature.

Since her first solo exhibition, Story Without a Story, in 2005, she has presented bodies of work including A Song for Young Girls and Neulbom Bit, and has continued to develop Garden of Childhood as one of her major series. In addition to exhibitions in Korea, she has participated in international art events including Art Cologne and the Asia Contemporary Art Show Hong Kong.

In 2018, she was selected as an artist for the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Art Bank, and in 2024, she was selected for the ArtHub Art Criticism Support Project. Her works are held in the collection of the MMCA Art Bank, as well as in various institutional and private collections.

은하갤러리(아트인동산)는 2026년 아트인동산 작가공모 선정작가 초대전으로 Alissa J 작가의 개인전 「유년의 뜰」을 개최합니다.

Alissa J 작가는 2018년부터 「유년의 뜰」이라는 제목 아래 자신만의 회화 세계를 꾸준히 이어오고 있습니다. 2018년 네 차례의 초대전을 시작으로 2019년부터 2025년까지 여러 개인전을 통해 지속적으로 발표되어 온 「유년의 뜰」은 작가의 오랜 작업 여정을 보여주는 대표적인 연작입니다.

이번 전시에서는 인물과 동물, 꽃과 화분, 실내의 풍경과 밤의 장면 등 친숙한 대상들이 Alissa J 특유의 자유로운 회화적 언어로 펼쳐집니다. 화면 속 대상들은 사실적인 재현에 머물지 않습니다. 선명하고 때로는 예기치 않은 색채, 거침없이 이어지는 붓질과 겹쳐진 물감, 자연스럽게 흘러내린 흔적들이 서로 만나 하나의 장면을 만들어냅니다.

특히 작품 속 인물과 동물들은 익숙하면서도 어딘가 낯설고, 현실의 한 장면인 듯하면서도 이야기 속 풍경처럼 다가옵니다. 창가에 선 소녀, 고양이를 안은 인물, 서로 마주한 두 사람, 꽃과 동물, 깊은 밤의 풍경은 각기 다른 장면이면서 「유년의 뜰」이라는 하나의 세계 안에서 서로 이어집니다.

‘유년의 뜰’은 작가가 오랜 시간 반복해서 돌아오고 확장해 온 회화적 공간입니다. 이번 전시는 최근 제작된 2026년 작품들을 중심으로, Alissa J가 지속해 온 「유년의 뜰」의 현재를 보여줍니다.

자유로운 색과 선, 인물과 동물, 일상의 풍경이 만들어내는 Alissa J의 화면을 따라가며, 관람객 역시 저마다의 감정과 기억으로 작품 속 이야기를 만나보시기 바랍니다.

Alissa J

숙명여자대학교 회화과 및 동 대학원 회화과를 졸업했으며, 이에 앞서 이화여자대학교 불어불문학과를 졸업했습니다.

2005년 첫 개인전 「이야기 없는 이야기」 이후 「A Song for Young Girls」, 「늘봄빛」 등을 거쳐 ‘유년의 뜰’을 주요 연작으로 지속적으로 발표해왔습니다. 국내뿐 아니라 Art Cologne, Asia Contemporary Art Show Hong Kong 등 해외 미술행사에도 참여했습니다.

2018년 국립현대미술관 미술은행 선정작가, 2024년 아트허브 평론지원 프로젝트 선정작가이며, 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행을 비롯한 여러 기관 및 개인 컬렉션에 소장되어 있습니다.
