Exhibition Introduction
Jointly hosted and organized by Art in Dongsan and its sister gallery, 172G Gallery, this special exhibition is part of an international exchange initiative with Ahmad Shariff Art Gallery, based in Claremont, California. It marks the first invited solo exhibition in Korea by Ahmad Shariff, the gallery’s director and artist, presenting his paintings that offer profound reflections on war, healing, and the human condition.
Art in Dongsan has long engaged in international collaborations with galleries and artists from the United States, Canada, Japan, Indonesia and more. This exhibition continues that global dialogue through a special partnership with Ahmad Shariff Art Gallery, offering Korean audiences a fresh perspective on American contemporary art.
아트인동산과 자매갤러리인 172G Gallery가 공동으로 주최·주관하는 이번 기획전시는 미국 캘리포니아 Claremont에 위치한 Ahmad Shariff Art Gallery와의 국제 교류 프로젝트의 일환으로 마련되었다. Ahmad Shariff Art Gallery의 대표이자 작가인 Ahmad Shariff의 첫 번째 한국 초청 개인전으로, 그의 회화 작품을 통해 전쟁, 회복, 인간의 감정에 대한 깊은 통찰을 선보인다.
아트인동산은 미국, 캐나다, 일본, 인도네시아 등 다양한 국가의 갤러리 및 작가들과 국제 협업을 지속해왔으며, 이번 전시는 그 연장선에서 Ahmad Shariff Art Gallery와의 특별한 파트너십을 통해 한국 관객에게 미국 현대미술의 또 다른 결을 소개하는 뜻깊은 자리이다.
Exhibition Statement
Ahmad Shariff is an artist who heals through art and paints hope into the fabric of life. Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon amidst the violence of civil war, he later served with the U.S. Department of Defense in Iraq. After sustaining a serious injury and undergoing multiple surgeries, he returned to painting—finding in art a language of recovery and renewal.
His works span a wide range of materials including acrylic, India ink, oil, and watercolor, applied to diverse surfaces such as canvas, wood panels, and pages from old books. These choices reflect a layered reconstruction of memory, time, and emotion. Even in the face of pain and loss, his work remains rooted in hope and optimism.
With over two decades of experience as a graphic artist in Los Angeles, Ahmad has developed a distinctive visual language that transcends genre and boundary. His paintings provoke thought, stir emotion, and invite reflection—creating moments of resonance that bridge cultural divides.
This exhibition invites viewers into a quiet yet powerful emotional journey, exploring themes of war and peace, trauma and healing, and the enduring pursuit of hope.
Ahmad Shariff는 예술을 통해 삶의 상처를 치유하고, 희망을 그려내는 작가이다. 레바논 베이루트에서 내전의 폭력 속에 성장한 그는, 이후 미 국방부 소속으로 이라크에서 복무하며 또 다른 전쟁의 현실을 마주했다. 심각한 부상과 수술을 겪은 그는 다시 붓을 들었고, 예술은 그에게 회복과 재생의 언어가 되었다.
그의 작품은 아크릴, 인디아 잉크, 유화, 수채화 등 다양한 재료를 사용해 캔버스, 나무 패널, 오래된 책 페이지 등 이질적인 매체 위에 펼쳐진다. 이는 기억과 시간, 감정의 층위를 시각적으로 재구성하는 작업이며, 고통과 상실 속에서도 희망과 낙관을 놓지 않는 그의 철학을 반영한다.
20년 넘게 로스앤젤레스에서 그래픽 아티스트로 활동해온 그는 장르와 경계를 넘나드는 독창적인 시각 언어를 구축해왔으며, 관람객에게 사고와 감정을 환기시키는 깊이 있는 예술적 경험을 제공한다.
이번 전시는 전쟁과 평화, 상처와 회복, 그리고 그 너머의 희망을 이야기하며, 관람객을 새로운 감정의 여정으로 초대한다.
